- Ushakov spoke about the Russian Federation's response to the changes in the US peace plan for Ukraine
Russia has clearly stated to Washington its position on a peaceful settlement in Ukraine and is ready to strongly object to any changes to the American plan. This was stated on December 14 by Russian Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov to journalist Pavel Zarubin.
"We have very clearly stated our position [on the peace plan for Ukraine], which, it seems, was clear to the Americans," Ushakov said.
He explained that if changes are made to the peace plan after consultations between the United States, Europe and Ukraine, this will cause sharp objections from Moscow. According to him, the Russian position was clearly communicated to the American side and, apparently, understood by it.
The day before, the Bild newspaper reported that US President Donald Trump is showing strong pressure on Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky, seeking to obtain territorial concessions from him in the Donbas. Despite this, the US presidential administration assessed Zelensky's words about a possible referendum on a peace agreement, including territorial concessions, as a sign of progress in the negotiations.
On December 11, the Public television channel reported that Zelensky had allowed the holding of an "all-Ukrainian referendum" on the issue of territories. According to the TV channel, Zelensky said that the citizens of Ukraine should express their opinion on the issue of Ukraine leaving the controlled part of Donbass.
Zelensky said on December 8 that the points that Ukraine considered controversial were excluded from the settlement plan proposed by the United States, leaving 20 points out of 28. He believes that at the moment there is no compromise on the issue of territories.
