For Russia, the fundamental conditions for resolving the conflict in Ukraine remain guarantees of Kiev's non-entry into NATO. This was announced on December 14 by Natalia Nikonorova, Senator from the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR).

"The issues of eliminating the root causes of the conflict, guaranteeing Ukraine's non-entry into NATO, and the need for its denazification and demilitarization remain fundamental," she said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

Nikanorova added that Donbass and Novorossiya are historical Russian regions and their return to Russia is enshrined in the Constitution of the Russian Federation. According to the senator, the longer the Ukrainian leadership ignores the demands of Western allies to resolve the conflict, the worse it will affect both Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky and ordinary Ukrainians, who, according to her, are being used as "cannon fodder."

The politician also stressed that these territories will be returned in any case, either diplomatically or militarily. In addition, she pointed out the need to respect human rights in Ukraine, including the free use of their native language and freedom of religion.

On December 9, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia would bring the special military operation (SVO) to achieve its goals. He stressed that Donbass was originally part of the RSFSR, but then Vladimir Lenin decided to transfer the territory to Ukraine. Putin noted that Russia is trying to end this armed conflict and is forced to achieve this through armed means.
