- Belarus has equated aggression against the CSTO member states to military threats to the country
President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko has signed a law defining an act of aggression against a Union state or a member state of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) as an attack on Belarus itself. The relevant document was published on December 13 on the National Legal Internet Portal.
Changes to the norms on military security and defense have been made taking into account the provisions of the updated military doctrine.
The tasks of the Armed Forces of Belarus include "constant readiness to use the allocated forces and means" to eliminate crisis situations that may provoke the outbreak of armed conflicts on the territory of the country itself or the republic's allies.
It is established that the armed defense of Belarus can be carried out both independently by the Armed Forces of the Republic and jointly with the armed forces of the allied States of the Republic of Belarus.
On November 27, Lukashenko said that military threats and risks were increasing on the western flank of the CSTO, and the situation looked like a besieged fortress. The Belarusian leader noted that in the current configuration of security in the Eurasian space, the CSTO remains relevant.
On the same day, Russian President Vladimir Putin called the CSTO a reliable guarantor of security and stability in the Eurasian space. He also noted that in the context of geopolitical tensions, the tasks of promoting collective interests are coming to the fore.
