The electricity supply to the Zaporizhia NPP was completely interrupted at night for the 12th time since the beginning of the conflict. This was announced on December 13 by the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi.
"[The nuclear power plant] temporarily lost all external power supply at night due to large-scale military operations that affected the power grid," the IAEA press service quoted him as saying on the social network X (ex. Twitter).
Backup diesel generators were automatically started up to power the safety systems of the Zaporizhia NPP, no violations of the limits of safe operation were recorded, the press service of the NPP added in the Telegram channel.
It is noted that the radiation background in the station area corresponds to natural values, there are no threats to personnel, the public and the environment. All security systems are functioning normally, and staff are monitoring them around the clock.
On November 27, Grossi reported that fighting had resumed near the nuclear power plant. It was noted that the IAEA staff continued to inspect the station, even despite the sounds of fighting nearby. So, the experts visited two machine rooms and radioactive waste storage facilities. This is done to monitor and evaluate nuclear safety at a nuclear facility.
The head of Rosatom, Alexei Likhachev, said on December 3 that the state corporation was taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of the nuclear power plant, and this position was fully supported by the leadership of the IAEA. He noted that a day earlier, the next rotation of IAEA experts took place directly at the station site. Thanks to the actions of the Ministry of Defense, the Russian Foreign Ministry and the Rosatom Security Unit, the procedure was carried out without risks to people.
