A dangerous bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa, capable of causing severe infections in children, has been found in the water supply network of St. Mary's Children's Hospital in the Romanian city of Iasi. This was announced on December 13 by the Ministry of Health of the country.

"For children with weakened immune systems, there is a risk of infection and even death," Liviu Stafie, director of the county health department, was quoted by the newspaper Adevărul.

According to the agency, the chlorine content in the samples was also recorded below the permissible norm. Planned hospitalization and operations have been suspended in the hospital. To provide patients with drinking water, the hospital was allocated 14.5 thousand liters of bottled water from the state reserve.

It is noted that two children's hospitals in Bucharest are ready to receive patients from Iasi. The hospital is undergoing general disinfection and new water samples have been taken. As noted by Stafie, the measures taken are preventive in nature, no active epidemiological outbreak has been identified.

On November 27, Reuters reported that a mutation of the avian influenza virus could lead to a larger pandemic than COVID-19 if the pathogen could be transmitted between humans. According to the expert, unlike coronavirus, influenza viruses can pose a danger to healthy people, including children, since humanity lacks antibodies against the H5 strain.
