Some work on dismantling the emergency power unit of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (Chernobyl NPP) was stopped or slowed down due to damage to the sarcophagus. This was announced on December 13 by the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi.
"Now, because of this, work that has been going on for a very long time has to slow down, and in some cases even stop, because it is impossible to work with corium or fragments of the molten reactor core if it is impossible to guarantee that the sarcophagus will provide perfect protection from possible radiation," RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.
Grossi noted that the assessment of the extent of the damage and its impact is carried out in two directions. The agency's staff is assessing the ability of the sarcophagus to remain insulated by the protection of the power unit, and is also studying the impact of damage on the continuation of work on dismantling the facility.
On December 5, Grossi said that the IAEA experts had completed a comprehensive safety assessment of the Chernobyl sarcophagus, which was seriously damaged as a result of a drone strike and the subsequent fire of the cladding in February. The Agency insists on carrying out further restoration work, including measures to control humidity and an updated corrosion monitoring program, as well as upgrading the monitoring system of the Shelter facility.
On October 1, the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine announced that there had been a power outage at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant for a new sarcophagus installed above the destroyed fourth power unit. It is noted that the Chernobyl nuclear power plant "was in a blackout." Later, the IAEA announced the restoration of power supply at the station.
