The Learn Moscow portal has published a quiz for the birthday of the Polytechnic Museum, one of the oldest and largest scientific and technical museums in the world. You can participate on the Learn Moscow portal and in the mobile application.

"In the quiz dedicated to the museum's birthday, users are asked to answer 9 questions.: how it was created, who built it and how, what are the architectural features of the building and how the Polytechnic lives today. Participants will not only be able to test their knowledge about the museum, but also discover new interesting facts. It will be interesting for the whole family to go through the quiz and compare the information they remember about the Polytechnic, since more than one generation of citizens has visited it over the 153 years of the museum's operation," the press service of the Moscow Department of Information Technology said.

Polytechnic Museum (the first name is the Museum of Applied Knowledge) It was opened on December 12, 1872, in a rented room at 7 Prechistenka Street. Two years later, construction began on its own museum building on Lubyanka Square. The central part was completed in 1877, and the right (southern) wing was completed in 1896. The North Wing, which houses a large auditorium, the best lecture hall in Moscow, was commissioned in 1907.

The initiators of the museum's organization were the leading Russian scientists of the late 19th century — Anatoly Bogdanov, Grigory Shchurovsky and others. The entire Moscow community, the city authorities and the imperial family actively participated in the creation of the museum. The main tasks were the dissemination of scientific knowledge and the formation of a scientific worldview.

The basis for the first museum collection was the exhibits of the Polytechnic Exhibition of 1872, dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the birth of Peter I. The exhibition featured samples of industrial, agricultural, military, scientific, technical and cultural achievements of the Russian Empire.

Today, a large-scale reconstruction is being completed in the historical museum building, which began in 2013. Due to all the spatial changes, the usable area was increased by ⅓ — from 32,000 m2 to 48,000 m2 — without rebuilding the facade. In 2026, the historical building of the Polytechnic Museum will reopen to the public. The museum will be completely renovated — not only technically, but also conceptually.

"Despite the reconstruction, the Polytechnic Museum continues to function, and the museum's storage facility, located in Technopolis Moscow, is open to the public. Guests can register for excursions in the Open Collection, use the services of the Polytechnic Library and participate in various educational and cultural projects of the museum both in the capital and in the regions of Russia," said Dmitry Kozhanov, General Director of the Polytechnic Museum.

Participating in the online quiz, users will have to name the architect of the museum's facade, recall how many years the construction of the museum building on Lubyanka Square lasted, which technical solution used in the construction was new in the architecture of public buildings, answer other interesting questions and learn a lot.
