The EP tried to disrupt the videoconference of MEPs with Russia
The European Parliament (EP) is trying to prevent a videoconference between parliamentarians from Russia and EP deputies. The corresponding statement was made by the conference organizer, Luxembourg's representative to the EP, Fernand Kartheiser.
"We are talking about real parliamentary diplomacy as opposed to the official boycott policy [from Brussels]," Kartheiser was quoted as saying by TASS.
The MP also said that he did not disclose the names of the deputies and the date of the conference in advance, because "he is trying to protect them from possible repression by the European Parliament." Kreiser also called the "atmosphere of fear" one of the tools to prevent the conference from taking place.
When asked about the topics of discussion at the videoconference, the deputy replied that they would "talk about the current political agenda, including the peace process in Ukraine conducted by the leadership of Russia and the United States, and the situation around the frozen assets of the Russian Federation."
Earlier in the day, Hungary announced that it was protesting against the departure from unanimity in the European Union (EU) in connection with the situation of frozen Russian assets. According to Prime Minister Viktor Orban, this procedure actually cancels the requirement of unanimity, which, according to the Hungarian Prime Minister, is illegal.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on November 27 that the confiscation of Russian assets located in the European Union would have negative consequences. In particular, the Russian government, on behalf of the head of state, is developing a package of retaliatory measures.
