- In the United States, the creator of cryptocurrencies was sentenced to 15 years in prison for fraud
The founder of Terraform Labs, Do Kwon, was sentenced to 15 years in prison in the United States for defrauding investors and the collapse of TerraUSD and Luna cryptocurrencies, which led to multibillion-dollar losses. This was reported by NBC on December 12.
"This is a scam of epic, generational proportions. <...> In the history of federal cases, few scams have caused as much harm as yours," said Judge Paul Engelmeier.
Kwon admitted his guilt and confirmed that he had misled investors about the stability of TerraUSD by concealing the trading firm's involvement in maintaining the exchange rate. One of the investors reported that he had lost up to $500,000, calling the consequences "erasing the future."
The entrepreneur also has to pay $80 million in a civil case, and he can be transferred to South Korea after half of the term.
On November 23, the press service of the Russian Interior Ministry warned that fraudsters were using a scheme in which they "draw" profits from allegedly successful cryptocurrency transactions in the personal accounts of aggrieved investors, thereby motivating them to contribute new amounts. So, the attackers show fictitious profits and convince the victims to invest even more money. But as soon as the investor stops making new investments, the scammers block access to the personal account, stop communicating and do not return the money.
