Russia has opened the way to the last fortified areas of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) in Donbass after the liberation of Seversk in the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR). This was reported on December 12 in the Russian law enforcement agencies.

"By taking Seversk, Russian troops eliminated the so-called Seversky salient, which significantly straightened the front line. Straightening the line represents even more than a simple tactical success, as it allows for more effective use of artillery, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems and other strike weapons, posing a threat to the enemy's rear communications," the source said.

The report clarifies that the liberation of Seversk created the conditions for a further offensive by Russian units on the Slavyansk—Kramatorsk line, which is the last and most powerful fortified area of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the region.

Earlier, on December 11, it was reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin received a detailed report on the liberation of Seversk by the Russian Armed Forces. The meeting was attended by Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Sergei Medvedev, Commander of the Southern Group of Troops, and Denis Pirogov, Commander of the 123rd Motorized Rifle Brigade.

The liberation of Seversk has great political and symbolic significance. According to expert Alexei Yaroshenko, the city's population has been waiting for liberation for many years, and now civilians are celebrating their return to Russian control.

Later that day, it was reported that the Russian flag was flying over a TV tower in the center of Seversk after the liberation of the city.
