After an earthquake of magnitude 6.7 occurred off the coast of Aomori Prefecture in Japan, a tsunami threat appeared. This was reported on December 12 by the Japan Meteorological Agency.

An earthquake of magnitude 7.2 occurred in northern Japan on December 8. Tremors were recorded off the east coast of Aomori Prefecture. The depth of the earthquake is about 50 km. Subsequently, a tsunami with a height of 40 cm was recorded in the northeast of Japan. In addition, near the city of Kuji in Iwate Prefecture, tsunami waves reached 50 cm in height.
Later, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi instructed the government to cooperate with regional authorities to rescue the victims and inform them about the tsunami and evacuation in a timely manner. Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara noted that about 800 households were left without electricity.
The Geospatial Information Administration of Japan reported on December 9 that a powerful earthquake off the coast of Aomori Prefecture in the north of the country led to a horizontal displacement of the earth's crust in the epicenter area by about 9 cm. The Agency also notes that the results of the preliminary analysis can be clarified after additional verification of the data.
