Russia hopes that the United States will refrain from a full-scale conflict with Venezuela, which threatens with unpredictable consequences. This was announced on December 11 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

"We hope that the White House will still be able to keep from further sliding into a full—scale conflict, which threatens to have unpredictable consequences for the entire western hemisphere," Zakharova said.

She compared the current US policy towards other countries with the policy of the big cudgel of Roosevelt, "who at one time proclaimed Washington's right to invade Latin America under the pretext of stabilizing the domestic economic situation." In her opinion, such a US policy cannot contribute to stability in the region.

The day before, American leader Donald Trump announced during a speech at the White House that the United States had seized a large tanker off the coast of Venezuela. It is reported that the hijacked vessel was under US sanctions.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed hope for an explanation from the United States for the detention of the tanker off Venezuela. He clarified that "without any trial, without investigation," the United States landed on the deck of the tanker and declared that it was transporting prohibited oil for sale.
