UNESCO has included the Swiss yodel in the list of intangible cultural heritage
The technique of Alpine shepherds singing — yodeling — has been included in the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Mankind. This was reported on December 11 by the AFP news agency.
The meeting of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee, at which the decision was made, was held on Thursday, December 11, in New Delhi. Switzerland submitted an application back in 2024.
Yodeling is a traditional style of singing without words by Alpine mountaineers in Austria and Switzerland, which was previously used to convey information in the mountains. It excludes words and is based on a sharp switch between the chest and head registers of the voice.
The Maratha Military Landscapes complex in India was officially included in the UNESCO World Heritage List on July 12. The historic site includes 12 forts located in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, reflecting the strategic vision, architectural ingenuity and defensive prowess of the Maratha Empire from the 17th to the 19th century.
