Russia will defend the rights of archaeologist Alexander Butyagin in Poland and seek his release. This was announced on December 11 by Charge d'affaires of the Russian Federation in the country Andrey Ordash.

"We will seek his unconditional release and departure from Poland," he said on the Rossiya 24 TV channel.

Ordash stressed that the diplomats are in constant contact with the Warsaw District Prosecutor's Office and the archaeologist's lawyer.

The detention of Butyagin in Poland at the request of Kiev became known earlier that day. According to RMF FM, the Ukrainian authorities were looking for him for allegedly illegal archaeological research in Crimea. The Warsaw court decided to arrest the archaeologist for 40 days.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called Butyagin's detention a legal outrage. He stressed that the Russian side would seek the scientist's release, and also advised Russians to refrain from traveling to Poland.
