The government has put an end to the issue of palm oil
The Russian government stated that the current laws on the production, transportation, storage and use of palm oil ensure safe products for adults and children. This was reported on December 11 by the Vedomosti website.
"The current and introduced regulatory measures sufficiently close the issue of palm oil quality control and do not require tightening," Denis Ternovsky, an employee of the RANEPA Center for Agri—food Policy, is quoted in the publication.
It is noted that in response to the decree of the State Duma on the possible restriction of the use of palm oil, it is noted that there is no evidence of its harm to children's health compared to other vegetable oils and animal fats. It was stated that from January 1, 2026, the new interstate standard GOST 31647-2025 will come into force, and the use of palm oil in children's institutions will be prohibited.
They also reported that there are requirements for additional oil purification at enterprises and its transportation in special vehicles. In 2024, 795 thousand tons of palm oil were supplied to Russia, with Indonesia as the main supplier.
The Fat and Oil Union of Russia supports the government's position, noting that current control measures ensure consumer safety and do not create unnecessary bureaucracy, Mikhail Maltsev, executive director of the union, is quoted as saying.
Earlier, on October 16, it was reported that the State Duma adopted a draft appeal to Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin on the issue of limiting the use of palm oil in the production of food products, including those intended for baby food. According to the draft appeal, the deputies proposed to the government to consider the introduction of excise taxes and an increase in the rate of customs duty on palm oil, as well as to create a single platform for monitoring the technological processes of food production using palm oil.
