The NYT learned about Rubio's order to stop using the Calibri font
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered to stop the official use of the Calibri font in the State Department and return to the Times New Roman, repealing a directive from the time of former White House President Joe Biden. This was reported on December 10 by The New York Times (NYT).
In a memo reviewed by the newspaper, Rubio said that returning to the use of the Times New Roman font "will restore decency and professionalism in the department's writing work."
The order says Calibri is "informal" compared to serif fonts such as Times New Roman.
"The switch to Calibri has brought nothing but a deterioration in the quality of official department correspondence," Rubio said.
He noted that Times New Roman was the official font of the department for almost 20 years until 2023.
In 2023, then US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken ordered the font to be changed on the recommendation of the State Department's Office of Diversity and Inclusion, which was subsequently abolished by Rubio. The change was intended to improve accessibility for readers with disabilities such as low vision and dyslexia, as well as for people using assistive technologies such as screen readers.
On December 2, American leader Donald Trump announced that he was canceling all documents signed by Biden, which were signed with a fountain pen. According to the American leader, people who have received documents of pardon or commutation signed in this way should pay attention to the fact that they have been completely annulled.
