How will the changed position of the United States affect European politics? Analysis
The new US national security strategy has declared the rejection of the transatlantic partnership with Europe. Such a sharp reversal threatens the Old World with a number of consequences. In the near future, Brussels will have to face the rise of the right-wing forces, which have received moral support from the head of the White House, Donald Trump, and figure out how to ensure their own security now. What will change in European politics now is in the Izvestia article.
What Trump proclaimed
• Recent days have clearly shown that the US attitude towards Europe is changing dramatically from alliance to confrontation. The White House first announced this in a new national security strategy approved by US President Donald Trump, and then he himself gave an interview in which he confirmed that the transatlantic partnership was becoming a thing of the past.
• The National Security Strategy states that it would be in the interests of the United States to negotiate an early end to the conflict in Ukraine, but European officials are at odds with Washington's intentions. The document accuses Europe of having unrealistic illusions about the Ukrainian conflict, the leadership of European countries is based on unstable minority governments and tramples on democratic principles in order to maintain power.
• The strategy also argues that Europe is facing not just economic decline, but the prospect of the destruction of its civilization due to incorrectly chosen landmarks. The Trump administration has accused Europe of uncontrolled migration, censorship, undermining political freedoms, loss of national identity and falling birth rates. Finally, the United States is now critical of the existence of NATO and does not want its further expansion, but seeks to transfer responsibility for its own defense to Europe.
• Later, in an interview, Trump accused European politicians of weakness and excessive political correctness. He criticized the state of London and Paris, which are under the burden of illegal migration, separately focusing on the personality of the mayor of the British capital Sadiq Khan and calling him a "disaster."
• However, not all of Europe has come under fire from the White House. Trump noted that he supports Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. He also spoke favorably of the European far-right parties, supporting their struggle for power in national governments.
How do right-wing parties react
• Although Trump expressed support for the extreme right and defended their basic political demands, the response around the US president turned out to be quite limited. First of all, the German Alternative for Germany (AfD) expressed moral support for Trump. She hopes that the outstretched hand from Washington will help her overcome the long-standing isolation in which Germany's leading parties hold her and give her long-awaited legitimacy. The leaders of the AFD called the criticism of Europe and its leaders by the United States recognition of their struggle against migration and globalism.
• At the same time, France's leading right-wing National Assembly party distanced itself from Trump and his attacks. Its leader, Jordan Bardella, said that although he supports anti-immigrant policies, he also does not agree with American interference in French politics. Statements were made by other party leaders, and the United States began to treat European countries as colonies from which much could be demanded. The "National Assembly" recalled that they still do not agree with the tariff agreement that Trump concluded with the European Union.
How do the EU authorities react?
• The leaders of European countries naturally expressed disagreement with the change in the US foreign policy. European Council President Antonio Costa has announced that Brussels will not accept Washington's interference in its affairs. He noted that now Europe must behave with the United States in accordance with American rhetoric, although he did not specify exactly what steps would be taken.
• Europe received unexpected support from Pope Leo XIV, a native of the United States. He warned against the huge changes that the union of Europe and the United States will now face, and called for maintaining strong relations between Western countries.
• German Chancellor Friedrich Merz partially agreed with Trump's criticism. He pointed out that some of the new national security strategy of the United States can be understood. He also concluded that it was time for Europe to rebuild its armed forces and stop hoping that America would provide military assistance if necessary. Merz called on Europe to become more independent from the United States in terms of security.
What does this mean?
The break with Washington threatens Europe not only with a failure in defense. Trump has made it clear that he will support right-wing parties in their struggle for power in the European Union and the United Kingdom. In this regard, it is expected that the current centrist governments will attack right-wing politicians with renewed vigor and continue to create barriers for them, as they did during the Romanian presidential elections.
• In turn, this will lead to further discrediting of European institutions and their disintegration. Europe will have to find resources to recover from the unexpected blow from the United States, and possibly make some concessions, weakening its supranational policy. The current economic situation in Europe, which has been left without major support from global players, will lead to these concessions being much more significant than Brussels can currently imagine.
