The flu can cause a wide range of dangerous complications, and their nature directly depends on the individual characteristics of the patient's body. This was stated by Alexander Gorelov, Deputy Director for Scientific Work of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, at the Izvestia News Center on December 10 during a press conference on: "Seasonal diseases: the main risks and protective measures".

"We are all individuals, where it is thin, it breaks. For some, pneumonia is the most common complication. Someone has a heart problem, someone has a kidney problem, someone has a brain problem, because all kinds of cells of the human body are affected in almost 48 hours with the flu," Gorelov said.

He recalled that the flu is characterized by high fever, dry nose and dry cough at the beginning of the disease, but in the future the symptoms may differ little from other respiratory infections. Currently, there are specific anti-flu medications, but for their appointment, the doctor must confirm the diagnosis. This possibility is provided by the clinical guidelines issued by the Association for Infectious Diseases.

Drugs targeting the flu virus will have the maximum effect only with a confirmed diagnosis. Gorelov explained that about half of the diseases have a clinical picture similar to the flu, and universal therapy is prescribed in such a situation. The clinical guidelines specify a different level of evidence for each drug.

The main algorithm of actions for the disease, according to Gorelov, should be as follows: at the first symptoms, stay at home, call a doctor who will conduct an express diagnosis. Only after that, taking into account the individual "baggage" of the patient's concomitant diseases, adequate and accurate therapy can be prescribed. This approach allows you to evaluate all the components of the patient's condition and choose the right treatment strategy.

Ekaterina Belova, an allergist and immunologist at the Atribeaute clinic, said on November 25 that it was useless to strengthen the immune system during illness. The specialist dispelled the myth about the work of immunity in acute respiratory viral infections and flu. According to her, the immune system can be strengthened in case of illness, but this only works if a person has an immunodeficiency.
