The ambassadors of the European Union countries have approved the bloc's plan to phase out Russian gas imports by the end of 2027. This was reported on December 10 by the Reuters news agency, citing Denmark's representative to the EU.

"According to the agreement, the EU will stop importing Russian liquefied natural gas by the end of 2026 and pipeline gas by the end of September 2027," the article says.

The ban on Russian gas imports still requires official approval at a meeting of EU ministers and the European Parliament before it comes into force.

Parliament will vote on the issue next week, and EU ministers are expected to formally approve the ban early next year. EU officials expect both sides to approve the agreement with a strong majority, "despite opposition from Hungary and Slovakia."

On October 20, the EU Council approved the proposal of the European Commission (EC) to ban gas purchases in Russia from January 1, 2028. In addition, the EU has also decided to impose a ban on the transit of Russian gas through the union to other countries. This measure will take effect on January 1, 2026.
