Many familiar foods can systematically weaken the body's protective barriers and worsen the course of chronic diseases, especially in winter. Allergologist-immunologist of the Polyclinic network.<url>" Alina Romanova told Izvestia how excessive consumption of salt, preservatives, smoked meats, alcohol and caffeine affects the immune system and the general condition of the body.

According to the expert, excessive amounts of salt, smoked meats and products with preservatives do not affect the body locally, but in a complex way. These types of food overload the microbiome and gradually undermine the natural defense mechanisms.

"Nutrition is not just calories, it is a powerful lever of influence on the immune system, capable of either preventing or, conversely, triggering the development of diseases," Romanova said.

The expert clarified that regular consumption of foods high in salt, trans fats and sugars leads to disruptions in the work of the intestinal microbiome, skin, lungs and nasal cavity, which increases the risk of allergies, eczema, asthma, allergic rhinitis and frequent viral infections.
