Russians still prepare traditional New Year's dishes, but such a menu can be dangerous for the elderly with chronic diseases: in January, the number of hospitalizations due to overeating and dietary disorders increases. Taisiya Galushina, a general practitioner, clinical nutritionist, and deputy chief physician for the medical department of the Opeka system of services for the elderly, told Izvestia on December 13.

"It is especially important to keep a balance in the menu for the elderly. Vegetables should make up half of the plate, protein products (meat, fish, seafood) should make up a quarter, and complex carbohydrates (cereals, durum wheat pasta) should make up another quarter. I also recommend reducing salt intake, as it provokes swelling and increases the load on the heart. To improve the taste of the dishes, use spices and herbs — dill, parsley, basil," said the expert.

She also advised reducing the amount of sugar and getting rid of fried dishes in favor of boiled, baked and stewed ones, and replacing alcohol with healthy drinks like berry compotes and tea with ginger.

Alexey Mavrin, the founder and managing partner of Opeki, emphasized that a holiday is primarily about caring for loved ones. Traditions must adapt to the state of health. Moderate portions and thoughtful ingredient substitutions help keep you in the mood without risking your well-being.

Among the healthy dishes, experts suggest cabbage salad with apples, warm salads with chicken and vegetables, baked fish as a source of omega-3, lean meat, stewed vegetables and light desserts made from fruits and yogurt. Portion control will also be useful: small plates, leisurely meals and breaks, such as a short walk. It is important for people with gastritis, pancreatitis or diabetes to take into account the recommendations of doctors when making a menu.

Experts recalled that a competent choice of dishes allows not only to preserve health, but also to prolong an active life. Taking care of the elderly during the holidays helps them to celebrate the next New Year with their family cheerful and full of energy.

On December 2, family psychologist Daria Salnikova told how to survive the New Year's rush and celebrate the holiday happy. In particular, she advised to start preparing for the holidays in advance and reconsider your attitude to "mandatory" cases.
