Venezuela thanked Russia for its support and concern about the new U.S. strategy
Venezuela expressed gratitude to Russia for its support and concern for the new national security strategy of the United States. This was announced on December 9 by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Bolivarian Republic in the Telegram channel of Foreign Minister Ivan Gil Pinto.
"On behalf of the President of [Venezuela, — Ed."We express our gratitude and support for the statement of the Russian government made by Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, who expressed concern about the neocolonial intentions of American imperialism in the new national security strategy," the statement said.
It is noted that Venezuela expresses serious concern about the Pentagon's actions around the country and hopes that the White House will be able to avoid a full-scale conflict that could have unpredictable consequences for the entire Western Hemisphere.
The Foreign Ministry emphasized its firm rejection of the growing US interference in the affairs of the region, comparing modern actions with the "Roosevelt Consequence" of 1904 and a return to the colonial "Monroe Doctrine" of 1823.
Earlier in the day, it was reported that the United States is considering launching a military operation against drug trafficking from Colombia and Mexico. US President Donald Trump stressed that drug trafficking remains one of the main threats to the United States, and the administration is exploring all possible counteraction measures, including force.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on December 8 that the escalation of tensions around Venezuela, fueled by the Pentagon, could lead to unpredictable consequences for the entire Western Hemisphere. She also noted that the wording of the document resembles the so—called "Roosevelt Amendment" - the doctrine of the 26th President of the United States Theodore Roosevelt. That doctrine proclaimed Washington's right to interfere in the affairs of Latin American countries under the pretext of stabilizing their domestic economic situation and solving problems. The diplomat stressed that such a reference is particularly alarming against the background of the current tension around Caracas.
The New York Times (NYT) reported on November 4, citing informed sources, that the Trump administration is considering three options for military operations against Venezuela. It was clarified that, according to the first concept, the US Air Force (Air Force) would launch an airstrike on military installations in order to deprive Maduro of support.
Later, Trump announced possible military measures if Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro does not leave office. It was noted that Trump and Maduro also discussed Venezuela's demands for a general amnesty for Maduro, his senior aides and their families.
