Alexander Bastrykin, Chairman of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, has opened a criminal case against Denis Nikolaev, a judge of the Novgorod District Court, who is suspected of taking a large bribe.

"The Chairman of the Investigative Committee, Alexander Bastrykin, with the consent of the Higher Qualification Board of Judges, initiated a criminal case <...> against Denis Nikolaev, a judge of the Novgorod District Court of the Novgorod Region, whose powers were terminated prematurely," the Investigative Committee's website says.

According to the investigation, in April in Veliky Novgorod, Nikolaev received 500 thousand rubles through a friend and lawyer of the accused in a criminal case of intentional infliction of serious harm to health, which was in his production. The bribe was intended for the imposition of a punishment unrelated to actual imprisonment.

The involvement of the judge is confirmed by the materials of operational investigative activities. Investigative actions are currently underway to establish all the circumstances of the crime.

On the same day, Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Alexander Gutsan spoke about the initiation of 350 corruption cases in key areas of the state. Gutsan added that corrupt officials primarily target areas with large finances — national projects, military needs and infrastructure of new regions.
