The State Duma assessed the likelihood of an alliance with Hungary
Russia and Hungary could unite in order to resist external pressure together. This opinion was expressed by State Duma deputy Svetlana Zhurova on Tuesday, December 9.
"For our part, we are always ready to help and interact with friendly countries. Especially when it comes to opposing the West. But the main thing here is probably not to do any harm, because our support sometimes only results in more pressure for the country," she said in a conversation with Lenta.Ru .
The parliamentarian noted the great support of Hungary, which regularly blocks Europe's anti-Russian decisions. According to Zhurova, Moscow and Budapest have a common past that can help them unite.
"Once we were in a social camp together, we resisted together. This memory has been preserved in humans as well. If some kind of another merger takes place, it would be very understandable," the politician concluded.
Earlier in the day, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations Peter Szijjarto said that Hungary urges those who obstructed the peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine to come to their senses, RT reports.
He also noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban discussed a number of issues related to cooperation between the two countries. According to Szijjarto, the meeting of the heads of state in the Kremlin gave a new impetus to Russian-Hungarian relations, IA Regnum reports.
The trade turnover between Russia and Hungary is growing despite the actions of the European Union (EU). This was announced on December 9 by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at a meeting in Moscow with Hungarian Minister of Foreign Economic Relations and Foreign Affairs Peter Szijjarto.
According to Lavrov, cooperation between the two countries is ensured, in particular, through the development of the electric power industry.
On December 6, Orban announced the visit of a large delegation to Russia, noting that Hungary is actively negotiating with Russia on strategic and economic cooperation after the lifting of sanctions.
During the talks between Orban and Putin in the Kremlin on November 29, the Russian leader also said that relations between Russia and Hungary are based on pragmatism and "the best of what has happened" in their history. Putin noted his long-standing acquaintance with Orban, as well as the fact that, despite all the difficulties, the countries' relations continue to develop.
