New road signs from January 1, 2026 — what will change on Russian roads

New signs will appear on Russian roads starting January 1, 2026. The changes will affect both independent signs and signs with additional information for drivers. Read about the innovations that await car owners in the Izvestia article.

New road signs in 2026

In 2026, the updated GOST R 52289-2019, which sets standards for the use of road signs, will begin to operate in Russia. It provides for the introduction of more than 60 new signs and information plates responsible for regulating the movement of personal mobility equipment, taking into account environmental aspects and optimizing traffic flows within the city. Many of them have already been tested in Moscow.

At the same time, the new GOST does not completely cancel the previous one: many key provisions of the 2004 standard have been preserved in the updated document. However, there have been a number of significant changes, primarily concerning the road signs themselves.

Among the most notable innovations:

• The sign "Recommended speed when passing an artificial bump". His task is to help drivers reduce their speed in advance in front of speed bumps in order to avoid damage to the vehicle.;
• The vertical stop-line plate will be used in narrow areas where it is impossible to install a standard horizontal plate.;
• The sign "Deaf pedestrians" will appear in places where people with hearing impairment may be on the roadway.;
• The months will be added to the signs indicating the time of the sign's validity (for example, "April — September");
• A snowflake will appear next to the "Snow cover" icon. This will make it more compact to specify several weather conditions at the same time.

In addition, to reduce the visual burden on drivers, it will be possible to combine several signs into one. For example, a parking sign can be combined with a "Way to park a vehicle."

The pictographs on the "Paid parking" sign will also be updated — separate graphic symbols will be introduced for it: "payment via the app", "SMS" and others.

What else will change in the rules of traffic management in 2026

The changes in GOST will affect not only road signs, but also markings. So, starting in 2026, the standard size of a parking space for sequential parking along the edge of the road will change — it will become 25 cm narrower. 2.25 m wide and 6.5 m long will be allocated for one parking space instead of the previous 2.5 by 6.5 m. This will allow for more efficient use of the road space.

A number of amendments relate to the technical characteristics of the signs. Starting in January, all inscriptions on individual design signs installed on the same road must be executed in the same font. The requirements for fire safety of signs with interior lighting are also being strengthened.

The total warranty period for the marks will be at least 5 years from the date of manufacture. For signs with interior and exterior lighting, the warranty will remain the same — 2 years from the date of commissioning. Signs with a retroreflective surface will have a warranty of at least 7-10 years, depending on the type of film used in their production.
