The expert warned about the dangers of home back massage
Self-administered home back massage can be dangerous and can worsen existing health problems. This was announced on December 9 by the physiotherapist of the SM Clinic Jamila DzhandigovaГазете.Ru ".
"The main danger of home massage is the lack of diagnosis and proper technique. An untrained person cannot perform a high-quality diagnosis. Massage without understanding the condition of muscles, joints, ligaments and the presence of contraindications can worsen existing problems (such as protrusions, hernias, inflammatory processes) and damage soft tissues and blood vessels," the doctor emphasized.
According to the specialist, therapeutic massage is designed not only to relieve pain, but also to restore the correct motor pattern. Home treatments with painkillers or powerful vibration massagers often only dampen the symptoms and create a false sense of improvement, which leads to repeated stress and exacerbation of the disease. Dzhandigova draws attention to the fact that massage has a strong effect on the vascular and lymphatic systems: improper movements can cause lymphostasis, edema and tissue nutrition disorders.
"There is also a risk of ignoring contraindications that many do not know. Absolute contraindications include acute inflammatory processes, thrombosis and varicose veins in the acute stage, oncological diseases, skin diseases and damage to the skin, elevated body temperature. On their own, people often cannot properly assess their condition, which leads to serious complications," said Dzhandigova.
The doctor warns about the risk of vascular microtrauma in varicose veins and the danger for hypertensive patients if they work incorrectly with the collar area. Unprofessional vibration massagers and percussion pistols pose a particular threat — their uncontrolled use in the spine and neck can cause severe reflex spasm and injury, the physiotherapist noted. Professional massage, the expert added, involves diagnosis, medical history and combination with physiotherapy for safe and effective treatment.
Earlier, on December 7, Mariana Baragunova, a leading orthodontist at the EUROKAPPA Clinic scientific and clinical center, said that home mouthguards for bruxism, which are actively sold on marketplaces, are not able to eliminate the problem of night gnashing of teeth. According to the expert, such products are usually made of soft medical silicone.
