The development of the Arctic zone should receive a powerful impetus, and the Russian government continues to work actively in this direction. Alexey Chekunkov, Minister for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic, told Izvestia on December 8.

He recalled that the Arctic territories, like the Far East, occupy more than half of Russia's territory. Thanks to the decisions of Russian leader Vladimir Putin, the Far Eastern regions are ahead of the average Russian growth and investment rates in all economic indicators, the minister noted.

"The most important task for us is to get the same economic momentum in the Arctic, which is now attracting the attention of the whole world. This is, of course, the Northern Sea Route (NSR), and it is a new, broader concept — the Transarctic Transport Corridor," said Chekunkov.

He stressed that the Arctic territories have huge reserves of minerals, on which the entire global economy depends.

"Therefore, our task now is to open up the Arctic logistics, first of all, of course, the Northern Sea Route, so that everything we produce there can be brought to world markets," the minister concluded.

On November 24, Putin held a working meeting with the Governor of the Murmansk Region, Andrey Chibis, where they discussed the integrated development of the Arctic and the Transarctic transport corridor, including the Northern Sea Route. Chibis clarified that at the moment the Arctic is considered the foundation of the country's security and transport sovereignty.

On November 18, Putin said that Russia's position in the Arctic must be consistently strengthened. According to him, the comprehensive development of northern cities and towns, the creation of new jobs and the improvement of people's quality of life directly depend on the development of the infrastructure of Arctic ports. The President also pointed out the need to realize Russia's logistical potential.
