The doctor warned about the catastrophic consequences of using energy drinks
Energy drinks are a "metabolic bomb" of delayed action, whose harm consists of huge doses of stimulants, huge amounts of sugar and aggressive chemical components. This was stated by Evgenia Ivanova, an endocrinologist, internist and nutritionist of the highest category, in an interview with Izvestia on December 8.
According to her, caffeine, taurine and guarana artificially overload the nervous and cardiovascular systems, leading to tachycardia, hypertension, panic attacks and depletion of nervous resources.
"One can of a drink can contain up to 10-15 teaspoons of sugar, creating a monstrous load on the pancreas, forced to produce a huge amount of insulin. Regular consumption of energy drinks is a direct path to insulin resistance and the risk of developing type II diabetes. Acids and chemical additives in the composition destroy tooth enamel, disrupt the acid-base balance and irritate the mucous membrane of the gastrointestinal tract," the endocrinologist warned.
Ivanova stressed that there is no safe dose for adolescents and young people under the age of 21, since their endocrine and nervous systems are extremely vulnerable during their formation. For a healthy adult, it is conditionally acceptable, but unsafe, to consume no more than one can per day and not on a regular basis. Even this dose poses a risk in the presence of problems with blood pressure, heart, pancreas or thyroid gland.
According to the doctor, looking for a direct replacement for energy drinks is a wrong way. Instead, it is necessary to fill the shortage of resources that these drinks only mask. The key sources of energy are adequate sleep, adequate water intake, a balanced diet including complex carbohydrates, proteins, vegetables and fruits, as well as regular physical activity. As a stimulating drink, natural coffee or high-quality tea in the amount of one or two cups per day is acceptable.
"The catastrophic consequences of regular consumption of energy drinks are often irreversible. On the part of the endocrine system, this threatens the development of diabetes mellitus, severe thyroid dysfunction and adrenal gland dysfunction. The cardiovascular system reacts with arterial hypertension, arrhythmias and a high risk of heart attacks and strokes even at a young age," the doctor warned.
Also, according to her, damage to the nervous system is likely in the form of anxiety disorders and depression, the development of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract such as gastritis and pancreatitis, and urolithiasis due to impaired mineral metabolism.
Australian scientists have been monitoring the elderly for 10 years and found that regular tea consumption is associated with higher bone density, while excess coffee, on the contrary, can reduce it.
