The ICI RAS predicted a prolonged magnetic storm on December 9
The magnetic storm that will touch the Earth on December 9 will start earlier than previously forecast and will last longer. This was announced on December 8 at the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the Institute of Space Research (IKI) of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
"There has been a rather harsh update of the forecast for the expected magnetic storm tomorrow. For yesterday's plasma release, the velocity was recalculated, which turned out to be higher than the earlier estimates," the laboratory's Telegram channel says.
It is noted that the arrival of solar plasma will be postponed for half a day and is expected today at midnight. In addition, due to the higher velocity of matter, the average level and duration of disturbances are increased. At the same time, three strong M-level flares and one high-class X event have been recorded in the Sun since the beginning of the day.
Yesterday it was reported that in the next few days, magnetic storms of medium and strong levels are predicted on Earth. So, in the upcoming Tuesday and Wednesday, we should prepare for magnetic storms of the G2–G3 level, which may affect the operation of satellites and communication systems.
