By 2035, the Chinese shipbuilding company Jiangnan Shipyard intends to begin construction of the world's largest nuclear-powered container ship capable of transporting 25,000 standard shipping containers. This was reported on December 8 by the South China Morning Post (SCMP) newspaper.

"Jiangnan Shipyard (Group), a state—owned shipbuilding company, plans to build the world's first nuclear-powered container ship, which will strengthen China's dominant position in an industry that is increasingly switching to renewable energy sources," the material says.

According to the vice president of the company, Lin Qingshan, this construction can begin in 10 years. The amount of investments required for the construction was not disclosed. The vice president added that Jiangnan Shipyard plans to equip its ships with a 200 MW thorium reactor. It is specified that this reactor belongs to one of the six globally recognized fourth-generation reactor projects and is designed for 40 years of operation.
