Japan has requested public support from the United States amid a rift with China over Taiwan. This was reported on December 7 by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper, citing sources.

"Shigeo Yamada, the Japanese ambassador to Washington, has asked the administration of [US President Donald] Trump to strengthen public support for Tokyo," the publication says.

It is noted that the request was made after the incident with criticism of Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi by the Chinese authorities. Then the PRC threatened economic sanctions and urged its citizens to avoid traveling to Japan.

Bloomberg news agency, citing Taiwan's Foreign Minister Lin Jia-lung, said on December 2 that the diplomatic conflict between China and Japan could last about a year. It is clarified that the tension began after Takaichi's statements about possible military participation in the event of China's operation against Taiwan, which Beijing called "crossing the red line."

The Sohu news agency reported on November 18 that Takaichi's statements about his readiness to deploy self-defense forces in the event of China's attempt to establish control over Taiwan caused a crisis in international relations. China's response was immediate: a Chinese Navy electronic reconnaissance ship was detected about 70 km from an important Japanese defense point, Kagoshima.
