The associate professor told about the danger of buying red caviar with her hands
Buying red caviar from private ads from unknown sellers has the opportunity to harm your health, as there is a high risk of running into a fake. This was announced on December 7 by Svetlana Ilyashenko, Associate Professor of the Basic Department of Trade Policy at Plekhanov Russian University of Economics.
"Buying by hand, including social media, from unverified sellers is definitely a "Russian roulette" with health and wallet. But when buying from an ad, there is not only the risk of buying counterfeit goods, but also a real danger of getting severe food poisoning or contracting parasites," she said in an interview with TASS.
It is specified that this is especially true for red caviar. Common problems include counterfeiting (imitation caviar), non—conformity with the declared product (over-sorting) and non-compliance with storage conditions.
According to Ilyashenko, the safest purchase option is large, trusted stores. Quality and safety are guaranteed there, since the products are accompanied by all necessary documents, have a clear label (including an "Honest Mark"), expiration dates and composition are indicated.
In addition, stores usually comply with storage conditions such as proper temperature and no defrosting. Buying on the markets or by hand on the Internet is a risk for those who are willing to take it for the sake of possible savings. It is expected that before the New Year, prices for red fish and caviar will rise to about 1.4 thousand and 9.9 thousand rubles per kg, respectively, due to seasonal demand and other factors.
According to Rostat data dated November 27, in Russia, the production of red caviar per person in January – September of this year amounted to 74.4 g, which is almost 1.4 times more than last year. A total of 10.9 thousand tons of caviar were produced in the country, which is 3.1 thousand tons more than in the same period last year (7.8 thousand tons). The population of Russia at the beginning of the year remained at the level of 146.1 million people.
Rosrybolovstvo Ilya Shestakov reported on October 22 that in Russia red caviar and red fish may become cheaper by the New Year. At the same time, according to Shestakov, these products will be sufficient both for the domestic market and for export.
