- The Russian Security Council noted the importance of increasing cooperation with Central Asia
It is important to develop cooperation between Russia and the countries of Central Asia and the Caspian region in the development of water use and environmental protection programs, management of transboundary water resources, flood control, implementation of water-saving technologies and modernization of irrigation systems. This was announced on December 5 following a meeting of the Committee on CIS issues of the Scientific and expert Council of the Security Council of the Russian Federation.
The experts reviewed the problems of water management caused by climate change, the drying up of the Aral Sea, a decrease in river flows and the shallowing of the Caspian Sea, the press service of the Security Council of the Russian Federation reported.
"The participants also noted that, in addition to climatic reasons, the uneven distribution of water resources in the region, irrational water use, deterioration of water and energy infrastructure, environmental pollution, and imperfect economic and legal mechanisms for water management have a negative impact on the state of water resources," the statement said.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted on November 6 that Russia and many Central Asian countries are linked by advanced integration processes. He stressed that President Vladimir Putin has very good, sincere, friendly relations with many leaders of the region, which makes it possible to deal with interstate affairs very effectively."
On October 9, Putin noted that Russia and the Central Asian countries adhere to common or similar approaches to global problems. The countries also coordinate their positions in the UN and other multilateral formats, the Russian leader added.
