Last week, experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) completed a comprehensive safety assessment of the sarcophagus at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (ChNPP), which was severely damaged by a drone strike and subsequent cladding fire in February. This was announced on December 5 by the Director General of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi.

"Limited temporary repairs have been carried out on the roof, but timely and comprehensive restoration remains essential to prevent further degradation and ensure long—term nuclear safety," said CEO Grossi in a report on the organization's website.

The IAEA insists on carrying out further restoration work, including measures to control humidity and an updated corrosion monitoring program, as well as upgrading the monitoring system of the Shelter facility. It is specified that the supporting structures and monitoring systems have not received irreversible damage. According to the Director General, additional repairs will be carried out at the Chernobyl facility in 2026 with the support of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to restore the containment function.
