A rare natural phenomenon "ice wool" was discovered in the forest in Shchelkovo. This was reported in the Telegram channel of the Forestry Committee of the Moscow region on Friday, December 5.

Specialists of the Moscow Educational and Experimental Forestry saw a natural phenomenon, also known as "ice wool" and "frosty beard", near the village of Ryazantsy in the Shchelkovo urban district in the forest plantations of the Fryanovsky district forestry.

"The key factor in the formation of "ice hair" is the presence of a certain type of fungus, Exidiopsis effusa. It promotes the formation of these thin structures and prevents their rapid recrystallization into larger crystals," the Moscow City News Agency quoted the message as saying.

According to Darya Chumakova, assistant district forester of the Moscow Educational and Experimental Branch of the State Agrarian University of the Ministry of Defense "Mosoblles", the conditions for the occurrence of a natural phenomenon appeared due to weather anomalies.

The appearance of brittle ice filaments was facilitated by high humidity, an air temperature just below 0 degrees, the absence of strong wind, as well as wet rotting hardwood, Moscow 24 reports.
