The United States called for ensuring Europe's security on its own
The United States wants European countries to take responsibility for their own defense. Information about this follows from the American National Security Strategy, published on December 5 on the White House website.
"To provide Europe with the opportunity to stand firmly on its own two feet and act as a group of sovereign states, including by assuming primary responsibility for its own defense," the document says.
The strategy also notes that in the long term, most NATO members may turn out to be non-European, which is why such states will perceive the nature of their allied relations with the United States differently.
Earlier, on December 3, the Politico newspaper reported that at a meeting of NATO foreign ministers, US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau criticized his European colleagues for protectionist policies in the arms market. According to a US State Department official, Landau wanted to raise the issue of collective defense.
