- Sobyanin recalled the anniversary of the counteroffensive in the Battle for Moscow
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin congratulated on the anniversary of the beginning of the Soviet counteroffensive in the Battle for Moscow. In his MACH channel, he thanked the front-line soldiers and home front workers.
Sobyanin recalled that in December 1941, the fate of the country and the whole world was being decided under the walls of the capital. He noted that the first major success during the Great Patriotic War gave the people strength and strengthened faith in victory over the Nazis.
"We will always be grateful to the heroic generation of front—line soldiers and home front workers who defended their native land," Sobyanin wrote. He stressed that the winners' legacy is sacred to current and future generations.
"We will never forget the feat of those who selflessly defended themselves and went on the attack through the snow—covered fields near Moscow," promised the mayor of the capital. He wished the veterans "good spirits, health, well-being, peaceful skies and all the best."
December 5 is the day of the beginning of the Soviet counteroffensive near Moscow. It is celebrated annually in Russia as one of the Days of Military Glory. The Battle for Moscow, which unfolded in the autumn of 1941 and the winter of 1942, became one of the key battles of the Second World War and the Great Patriotic War. It was on December 5 that the Soviet troops launched a full-scale counteroffensive. In the early days, the enemy was able to push back more than a hundred kilometers from the capital and liberate the territories of the Moscow, Tula and Ryazan regions, as well as certain areas of the Kalinin, Smolensk and Oryol regions.
