The doctor warned about the consequences of the habit of lying down after eating
After eating, some people notice a desire to lie down, but this habit can seriously harm digestion. The most common problem that occurs in the supine position after eating is gastroesophageal reflux. Anastasia Gostrous, a gastroenterologist at SM Clinic, told about this on December 5.
"Between the esophagus and the stomach is the lower esophageal sphincter, a muscular ring that acts as a 'valve.' It allows food to enter the stomach and prevents its return. In the supine position, the stomach is positioned horizontally, and the pressure on this "valve" increases. As a result, the sphincter may not close tightly, and the contents of the stomach are thrown back into the esophagus. <...> Constant reflux damages the mucous membrane and can lead to a serious disease — GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease)," she warned in an interview with the newspaper.Ru».
As a result, digestion slows down and can be disrupted: food lingers in the stomach and causes bloating and heaviness. According to the expert, it also affects metabolism, sugar levels and recovery if the meal was later than 3-4 hours before bedtime.
To avoid these and other problems, Gostrous advises taking short walks immediately after eating, not taking a horizontal position earlier than 1.5–2 hours after eating, and not going to bed immediately after eating.
Vera Seryozhina, an expert at the LabQuest medical company, told Izvestia on December 1 that there are "mute" forms of gastritis that do not manifest themselves in classic symptoms. It usually manifests itself as acute inflammation, in which there is pain, heartburn, or belching. The specialist noted that with this form of the disease, acidity decreases, enzymes are poorly secreted, there may be no pain, but food is not digested efficiently enough.
