- December 7 — International Civil Aviation Day: history, traditions, congratulations
Every year on December 7, Russia and other countries celebrate International Civil Aviation Day, dedicated to one of the most sought-after types of modern transport. In 2025, it falls on a Sunday. Read about the history and traditions of the holiday in the Izvestia article.
International Civil Aviation Day in 2025 — the history of the holiday
The idea to establish a special day dedicated to civil aviation was repeatedly expressed in the 1940s against the background of its rapidly growing importance for the post-war world. In 1944, a large-scale forum was held in Chicago, attended by delegates from 54 countries. The main outcome of the event was the signing of the Convention on International Civil Aviation.
The document went down in history as the Chicago Convention. He laid the legal foundations that allowed civil aviation to develop in a peaceful and safe manner. In the same year, 1944, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) was established to implement the principles of the convention. To this day, she is engaged in the development of global safety standards and regulation of civil aviation.
Russia became an ICAO member in 1970. Today, this organization unites more than 190 countries.
The official holiday of civil aviation was established in 1966 by the UN General Assembly. December 7, the day of the signing of the Chicago Convention, was chosen as the date for it.
The celebration highlights the role of aviation as a key sector of the global economy. It promotes the development of international trade, tourism, and business. Millions of passengers and tons of cargo travel vast distances between continents by plane every day.
In some countries, there are regions that are connected to the outside world exclusively by air, and aviation is vital for them. In Russia alone, more than 20,000 localities belong to areas where aviation is the only means of ensuring year-round transport accessibility.
Traditions of the International Civil Aviation Day on December 7
International Civil Aviation Day is celebrated in many countries. Traditionally, various events are held on this day aimed at supporting the industry and the professionals who ensure its work. Airstrikes are often held on December 7. The media produces special reports on the specifics of air transportation and interviews veterans and current aviation specialists.
Solemn meetings are held at enterprises. The heroes of the day — pilots, flight attendants, technicians and dispatchers — are awarded with certificates of honor and departmental awards for their labor services. Various seminars and conferences are organized for specialists, where innovations, problems and prospects for the development of civil aviation are discussed.
Every five years, during the ICAO jubilee years, the organization's Council defines a special motto for International Civil Aviation Day. A four-year slogan is also chosen between such "round dates". Since 2024, it sounds like this: "Safe sky. A sustainable future: together for the next 80 years." The motto was established in connection with the 80th anniversary of the signing of the Convention on International Civil Aviation.
Congratulations on the International Civil Aviation Day
Congratulations on the holiday are accepted by all civil aviation workers: pilots, flight attendants, dispatchers, aircraft maintenance engineers, and other specialists. Most often, they wish them clear skies, easy flights, and grateful passengers. Here are some examples of wishes:
