Europe may face major internal conflicts due to the desire of some states to completely abandon Russian energy resources. This is stated by the leading analyst of the National Energy Security Fund (NWF). Igor Yushkov said on Thursday, December 4.

According to the expert, the European Commission (EC) and the leadership of the European Union (EU) as a whole are trying to pass off this refusal as an already adopted decision.

"But there is one serious problem with him. A ban on the import of any goods, including energy carriers, is imposed as sanctions, and sanctions are imposed by a unanimous decision. So there will be a big conflict inside Europe," he said in an interview with Lenta.Ru .

Yushkov recalled that Hungary and Slovakia have traditionally supported energy purchases from Russia, and they will definitely oppose the import ban. Such a step would be extremely unprofitable for other European countries, the analyst added.

"The ban on pipeline gas imports will provoke shortages and price increases — everyone understands this. It's just that some countries have enough political will to demonstrate disagreement, while others don't," the expert said.

On December 3, EU countries adopted a preliminary agreement to ban imports of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG). In addition, the ban will also affect pipeline gas from the Russian Federation, RT reports. According to the press release, the total ban will come into force by the end of 2026. It was specified that the ban on the import of pipeline gas will take effect in the autumn of 2027.

On the same day, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said at a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels that the state would not agree with the dictate of Brussels, which wants to ban oil and gas supplies from Russia. He called the EU's plan to ban oil and gas imports from Russia both a dictate from Brussels and a fraud, since it is being adopted without a unanimous decision, according to the website. kp.ru .

On October 20, the EU Council approved the proposal of the European Commission (EC) to ban gas purchases in Russia from January 1, 2028. In addition, the EU has also decided to impose a ban on the transit of Russian gas through the union to other countries. This measure will take effect on January 1, 2026.

On December 3, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov drew attention to the fact that the EU could lose its leading potential in the economy due to the abandonment of Russian gas and would depend on energy sources that cost more. According to him, this initiative by European countries will inevitably lead to consequences for the EU economy.
