The former head of the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, resigned as rector of the College of Europe amid a fraud investigation. This was reported on December 4 by the Reuters news agency with reference to her letter.

Belgium's detention of Mogherini was reported on December 2 in the newspaper Le Soir. On December 3, the European Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) announced that she and two other European officials had been suspected of misusing the association's funds.
