The European Union (EU) understands that the theft of Russian assets will not pass without a trace, and the association shifts responsibility to each other. This was announced on December 4 at a briefing by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

"The European Union nevertheless understands implicitly that theft, especially on such a large scale, will not pass without a trace for the participants in this criminal scheme, and one way or another they will have to answer. As a result, there is an active process of shifting responsibility to each other," Zakharova said.

The diplomat stressed that any illegal actions of the European Union on Russian assets will receive a harsh reaction not only from the Russian Federation, but also from the international community. She also noted that Russia is preparing retaliatory measures in case the EU decides to commit the final theft of assets.

On the same day, the Financial Times newspaper reported that Europe had exhausted legal tricks to confiscate Russia's frozen assets. According to the publication, even supporters of the head of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen are not sure of the legality of her actions on this initiative.

On December 3, the European Commission approved a "potential reparation loan" for Ukraine, which implies the expropriation of sovereign Russian assets in Europe. EC President Ursula von der Leyen added that Kiev needs €135 billion by the end of 2027.

Prior to that, on November 27, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the confiscation of Russian assets located in the EU would have negative consequences. In particular, the Russian government, on behalf of the head of state, is developing a package of retaliatory measures.
