The current Group of Seven (G7) has shown that the club's work is highly politicized, so the issue of Russia's return to the Group of Eight (G8) is questionable. Grigory Karasin, Chairman of the Federation Council's International Affairs Committee, expressed this opinion on Thursday, December 4, explaining the statement by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"The fact is that the current Seven has proved over the past few years that their work is highly politicized, political, economic, and so on. Therefore, in such circumstances, to join this group of states again, mainly politicians, raises certain doubts, at least," the senator said in a conversation with Lenta.Ru .

"Philosophizing further, I must say that at the first stage, when we were invited to the G8, apparently, the idea of famous Western figures was to use our membership to solve their strategic tasks in relation to Russia. What was conceived then is now being shown in a somewhat distorted form in the development of the Ukrainian crisis. In this sense, our president is absolutely right," Karasin said.

Earlier in the day, Putin said that Russia does not want to return to the G8, RT reports. He also noted that the group's share in the global economy is decreasing from year to year, NSN reports.

On November 27, the UnHerd portal reported that Europe agrees to Russia's return to the G8 in order to preserve its international prestige. It is noted that the step to reform the G8 should be considered as a way to maintain the relevance of European states. In addition, according to the publication, from the point of view of Brussels, it is allegedly about "weakening the Moscow–Washington axis."
