The exclusion of the Russian language from the list of those subject to protection in Ukraine shows that the Kiev authorities are not interested in resolving the current conflict. This was announced on December 4 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

"What is happening in Ukraine with the language is complete madness. And, of course, such steps indicate the lack of a mood for a peaceful settlement in Kiev, because one of its conditions should be the abolition of discrimination against the Russian language, Russian—speaking citizens, and respect for the rights of all nationalities living in Ukraine," the diplomat said during a briefing.

Zakharova called on international organizations to give an objective assessment of the Kiev regime's decision taken the day before, as well as to encourage Ukraine to comply with its human rights obligations.

"I would like to ask: how would you selectively implement the Constitution [of Ukraine]? <...> And what about the Russian language in the Constitution? What does it say about the Russian language? Is anyone interested in Bankova?" the official representative of the department added.

Ukrainian MP Volodymyr Vyatrovych announced on December 3 that the Verkhovna Rada had supported a bill that excludes the Russian language from the list of those subject to protection in the country. He added that 264 deputies voted for the adoption of the law.

Zakharova said at the same time that Russia would carefully study the final text of the document of the Ukrainian deputies, which excludes Russian from the list of languages subject to protection. She recalled that a survey by the State Service for the Quality of Education and the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language showed that 66% of students in metropolitan schools in Ukraine do not speak Ukrainian in class, and 82% do not use it at recess.
