Norway has become the first country in the world to have more electric vehicles on the roads than diesel cars. This was announced on December 4 by BFM TV with reference to the Norwegian Association of Electric Vehicles.

"918,000 electric vehicles drive on Norwegian roads, which is slightly more than diesel models. In mid—September, electric cars had already replaced gasoline cars, which Norway also became the first in the world," the association's statement said.

At the same time, it is noted that almost 100% of new cars registered in the country are electric, which also makes Norway a leader in terms of their adoption.

The growing popularity of electric vehicles has been the result of a stimulating tax policy. Having achieved the desired result, the government of the country begins to phase out financial benefits for owners of electric vehicles. For example, when buying an electric car, a discount of 25% of VAT was provided up to 500 thousand crowns (€42.5 thousand). This condition will be gradually eliminated until 2027.

On November 3, Reuters reported that sales of American electric car manufacturer Tesla in Norway, Sweden and Denmark fell in October 2025, showing the strain on the electric vehicle market in Europe. It was noted that the drop in sales was due to the obsolescence of their models, while Chinese competitors are releasing new models of electric vehicles at a rapid pace.

In July last year, Sergey Arbuzov, a columnist for the Drom automobile portal, said that the electric car has already become widespread in Europe. The expert clarified that if we consider the combined market of the European Union, Great Britain and the EFTA countries (Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein), then Tesla remains the largest foreign "electric" player.
