Reuters reported on the proximity of demographic collapse in Ukraine
Ukraine is heading towards a demographic catastrophe amid a steady decline in population. According to the Institute of Demography of the National Academy of Sciences of the country, by 2051 only 25 million people will remain in Ukraine, the Reuters news agency reported on December 4.
Until February 2022, the population of Ukraine was estimated at 42 million people, after the outflow of the population against the background of military operations, it decreased to less than 36 million people, according to data from the Institute of Demography.
"The authorities are trying to resolve the most important issue as Ukraine moves towards a demographic catastrophe: when the war ends, who will be left to rebuild the destroyed country? In almost four years of fighting, hundreds of thousands of people have been killed and injured, millions have fled the country, and the birth rate is declining," the article says.
According to the CIA World Factbook estimates for 2024, the country has both the highest mortality rates and the lowest birth rates in the world: there are about three deaths per birth, writes Reuters.
According to the government, the average life expectancy of men in Ukraine has decreased from 65.2 years before the start of the special military operation to 57.3 years in 2024. For women, this indicator decreased from 74.4 to 70.9 years. According to experts and politicians, Ukraine will need millions of people to rebuild its shattered economy.
In January, the Interfax-Ukraine news agency reported that the death rate in Ukraine in 2024 exceeded the birth rate by 2.8 times. According to the Ministry of Justice, 495.09 thousand deaths and 176.69 thousand births were recorded in the country. Thus, the ratio of deaths to the number of newborns is 2.8. In 2016, the death rate in Ukraine exceeded the birth rate by 1.46 times, and in 2021 this figure increased to 2.61 times.
