Delfi announced an increase in VAT on Russian-language publications in Latvia
The Latvian authorities have decided to raise the value added tax (VAT) on books and press in Russian from January 1, 2026. This was reported on November 4 by the Delfi portal.
"The Cabinet of Ministers has approved an increase in VAT for the press and books in Russian. Starting from January 1, 2026, VAT on books and press in Russian in Latvia will amount to 21%," the article says.
At the same time, a reduced rate of 5% will be applied to publications in Latvian and other languages of the EU and the OECD.
On October 10, the media reported on the forced deportation from Latvia of over 800 Russians by October 13 due to non-compliance with migration regulations. It was clarified that in 2024 Latvia tightened the immigration law for Russian citizens.
The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, said that Latvia's actions on the demand to leave the country to Russian citizens who have not confirmed their knowledge of the Latvian language are Nazism.
