- The Chinese Foreign Ministry called on the United States to stop official contacts with Taiwan
China opposes any form of official interaction between the United States and Taiwan. This was announced on December 3 by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian.
"The Taiwan issue is at the core of China's key interests and is the first red line that cannot be crossed in Sino-American relations," the Chinese state—run Xinhua news agency quoted him as saying.
Lin Jian recalled that the one-China principle is the political foundation of Sino-American relations, and the U.S. government in a joint communique on the establishment of diplomatic relations clearly recognized the Government of the People's Republic of China as the sole legitimate government of China.
The diplomat called on the American side to faithfully observe the one-China principle and the provisions of the three joint communiques, approach the Taiwan issue with extreme caution, cease official contacts with Taiwan and refrain from any erroneous signals to separatist forces.
Reuters, citing Taiwanese President Lai Qingde, reported on November 26 that Taiwan plans to allocate an additional defense budget of $40 billion to strengthen its defense and purchase weapons from the United States. The President stressed that the additional funding is aimed at creating conditions for more informed decision-making in the region.
