The European Commission (EC) intends to ban the execution of foreign court decisions within the European Union (EU) as a response to the expropriation of assets by the Russian Federation. This was announced on December 3 by the head of the EC Ursula von der Leyen.

"We will prohibit the execution of foreign legal decisions on reparations loans within the EU," RIA Novosti quoted her as saying.

Along with this, von der Leyen noted the uncompromising nature of the issue of expropriation of Russian assets. Instead, it is planned to be approved by a "qualified majority of votes."

"This decision should be made unanimously," the head of the EC added.

Shortly before that, the EC board approved a "potential reparation loan" for Ukraine, which implies the expropriation of sovereign Russian assets in Europe. Von der Leyen added that Ukraine needs €135 billion by the end of 2027 to continue fighting against the Russian Federation and preserve the work of the state.

Earlier in the day, Bloomberg, citing a statement by Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevost, reported that the Belgian authorities had rejected a new legal proposal from the European Union to use frozen Russian assets to secure a loan to Ukraine. At the same time, Belgium fears legal consequences for the country, as most of the funds are deposited in the Euroclear depository based in Brussels. The government believes that "he will have to repay the loan if Russia sues."

On November 27, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the confiscation of Russian assets located in the EU would have negative consequences. In particular, the Russian government, on behalf of the head of state, is developing a package of retaliatory measures.
