- Egypt has denied the existence of agreements with Israel on the opening of the Rafah checkpoint
Egypt has stated that there is currently no agreement with Israel on opening the Rafah border crossing for residents of the Gaza Strip to leave. This was announced on December 3 by BFM TV.
The Egyptian side's statement was made shortly after the press service of the office of the Coordinator of Israeli Government Actions in the Palestinian Territories (COGAT) announced the upcoming opening of the checkpoint. According to COGAT, residents of the Gaza Strip will be able to leave the enclave through Rafah "in the coming days" in accordance with the ceasefire agreement.
"On Wednesday, December 3, Egypt denied any agreement with Israel to open the Rafah border crossing only for departures from Gaza," the TV channel said in a statement.
The Israeli army seized control of the border crossing in May 2024, claiming that it was allegedly used to smuggle weapons. The checkpoint briefly reopened in January 2025 as part of a two-month truce to allow humanitarian aid trucks and residents in need of medical treatment to pass through.
On November 6, Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz ordered that the territory along the Israeli-Egyptian border be considered a prohibited military zone and ordered the IDF to take additional measures against the smuggling of weapons using drones.
